Getting to know some basics

Essential oils have been around for thousands of years and are being rediscovered today for their healing.
What exactly are essential oils? They are the true essence of a plant (hence the name essential oils). These oils however are not like the greasy oils that contain fatty acids but are rather volatile(easily evaporated) oils. Terpenes, the main component of essential oils, are organic compounds produced by a plant to create an aroma, a key factor in the plant's ability to protect itself from parasites. Each plant species has a unique combination of 100 or more terpenes. These terpenes reside in plant's flowers, roots, leaves, bark, stems, or seeds. Essential oils are the pure concentrated form of a plant.

How are they made? Most essential oils are obtained from plants through three basic methods: distillation, expression, and either solvent extraction or hypercritical CO2 extraction. I will go over these methods deeper in my next few posts-these are just the basics!

How do I use them? There are three different methods for essential oils: topically, aromatically, and internally. Each oil has a different way it can be best utilized. The main thing to remember with oils is that since they are super concentrated you ALWAYS need to dilute the oil with a carrier oil (coconut, jojoba, grapeseed, peanut, olive, almond oil etc). Again I will go into this deeper in a following post.
Why Young Living? Not all oils are created equal. Young Living has a seed to seal promise that they stand by 100%. You will always get quality with them since they are committed to providing you with quality therapeutic grade oils.

Below I have posted a quick little video about the essential oil basics I like! I HIGHLY suggest the reference book that she talks about at the end of the video! It is amazing!

Now that you have learned some of the basics, I hope you will stick around to find out more and join me on my journey of better living!
