Did you know?

Did You Know:

  • that Europe bans 1,371 toxic chemicals from their personal care products and the US bans only 11?
  • the FDA does not regulate the personal care products industry and hopes that cosmetic companies will do their due diligence and issue safe products?
  • “safe”, “organic” and “natural” does not mean your products do not contain any toxic chemicals as well?
  • 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will get cancer in their lifetime, 1 in 68 children and 1 in 42 boys are identified with autism spectrum disorder in the US, and that Alzheimers is up 500% in the past 20 years?
  • according to the President’s Cancer Panel only 10% of cancer is genetic and 90% is caused by environmental factors?
  • that your personal and home care products (from shampoo to antibacterial wipes to makeup) contain carcinogenic ingredients, neurotoxins, endocrine disruptors and allergens that could be downright hazardous to your health?

Read your labels and avoid the following chemicals:

  • FRAGRANCE can be legally hidden in hundreds of ingredients in “fragrance” or “parfum”: a “trade secret” in the industry. More than 75% of the time if you have fragrance, you have legally hidden phthalates (THAL ates), known endocrine disruptors, that are linked with birth defects, breast cancer, infertility, liver, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and now with autism and ADHD in pregnancy by Dr. Philip Landrigan, Mt Sinai, Children’s Environmental Health Center.
  • PARABENS: Preservatives linked to breast cancer, endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity, and developmental defects. California Study (10/11) of BPA and methylparaben combination turned healthy cells into cancer cells, and rendered tamoxifin ineffective.
  • TRICLOSAN: is the active ingredient in “anti-bacterial” products, is registered with the government as a pesticide, and is a known endocrine disruptor. Triclosan is believed to disrupt thyroid function and contribute to liver and inhalation toxicity.
  • OXYBENZONE and OCTINOXATE: (and other chemical sunscreen “active ingredients”) are UV ray filters that are also known endocrine disruptors.
  • PETROLATUM & TETROLEUM INGREDIENTS: endocrine disruptors and carcinogens.

IMPORTANT NOTE: ALL SIX OF THE ABOVE ARE “ENDOCRINE DISRUPTORS” and are in many products that you use daily – and some will have multiples! They are important to avoid, because the endocrine system regulates ALL biological processes in the body: development of the brain and nervous system, growth and function of the reproduction system, metabolism and blood sugar levels, ovaries, testes, pituitary, thyroid and the adrenal glands. (Natural News)
The World Health Organization and the UN recently released a report that called endocrine disruptors a “Global Threat.” Small amounts matter, especially to the developing fetus.

  • PEG’s (polyethylene glycol) are petroleum byproducts. During manufacturing process carcinogenic contamination is created: 1,4 dioxane, which is a known human carcinogen, with liver and kidney effects.
  • SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) are considered carcinogens. SLES is something contaminated with 1,4 dioxane. You will never see 1,4 dioxane on a label, as companies are not required to list carcinogenic contaminants.
  • INGREDIENT THAT ENDS IN “-eth”: like ceteareth, triceteareth, etc. Also carry the contamination concern for 1,4 dioxane.

IMPORTANT NOTE: all THREE of the above ingredients carry carcinogenic contaminant concerns created during manufacturing of 1,4 dioxane. The government allows 10 ppm (parts per million) in any one products, but no one is testing. 1,4 dioxane can be stripped for pennies, and must be done for any product exported to EU.
  • RETINYL PALMITATE: in the presence of sunlight enhances skin cancer lesions by 21% (FDA, 2011 Report). It is in many sunscreens and moisturizers.
  • NANOPARTICLES: can cross the cell barrier and drive into organs, including the brain in humans. There is no way of knowing particle size, unless stated on the label. EU manufacturers must list any nanoparticles.
  • ALUMINUM and metals: these are bio-accumulative, meaning they store in your fat cells and accumulate, and are very hard to get rid of, in many deodorants.
  • DIETHANOLOMINE (DEA) and COCAMIDE DEA, LAURAMIDE DEA: DEA reacts with other ingredients to become the extremely carcinogenic nitrosodiethanolamine. Beware of other ethanolamines like triethanolamine (TEA) and monoethanolamine (MEA).
  • FORMALDEHYDE RELEASERS – DIAZOLIDINYL UREA, DMDM HYDANTOIN, QUATERNIUM: found in most personal care products. Formalydehyde can cause allergic reaction, dermatitis, joint pains and headaches, cancer and immune dysfunction.
  • SYNTHETIC COLOR/DYES: made from coal tar, which is a mixture of many chemicals, derived from petroleum. These colors may be contaminated with low levels of heavy metals and some are combined with aluminum substrate. Aluminum compounds and many heavy metals are toxic to the brain. ie. FD&C Blue 1, Green 3, Yellow 5 & 6, Red 33.
  • GLYCOL (propylene, butylenes, etc): synthetic petrochemical mix known to cause allergic and toxic reactions. Has been linked to cancer, developmental/reproductive issues, neurotoxicity and endocrine disruption.
  • MINERAL OIL: a petroleum ingredient that coats the skin like plastic wrap, disrupting the natural immune barrier, inhibiting its ability to breathe and absorb natural moisture and nutrition, and its ability to release toxins, which can promote acne and other disorders. The process slows down skin function and normal cell development causing premature aging.
  • TALC: in the same family as asbestos, talc is dangerous to inhale and has been linked to ovarian cancer.
  • SILOXANES: cyclomethicone and ingredients ending in “siloxane” (e.g., cyclopentasiloxane) are toxic, persistent, and have the potential to bioaccumulate. The EU classifies some as endocrine disruptors and possible reproductive toxicant that may impair fertility. Research shows some to cause uterine tumors and harm to the reproductive and immune systems. Some siloxanes can also influence neurotransmitters in the nervous system. Cyclomethicone is a mixture of three siloxanes.

Essential Oils & Children

As a mom my first question about essential oils was are they safe for my son? The answer? Absolutely, when diluted properly and used appropriately.

Any essential oil using mother should own this book, Gentle Babies by Debra Raybern, it is absolutely invaluable. This book covers essential oils for pregnancy, babies, toddlers, and young children.

Now I am going to share with you how I use essential oils with my son who just turned two in April.

Young Living has an amazing kidscents line of prediluted blends specially formulated for children. My son loves the idea that he has his own special "oyals" (how he says oils)! If he needs something he knows exactly which oil to get and when! So adorable.

The first on our list, and by far the most used in our household, is the Owie blend. This blend includes idaho balsam fir, tea tree, elemi, cstus, hinoki, helicrysum italicum, and clove oil prediluted with coconut oil.
This blend is amazing for aiding the healing process of all bumps, bruises, and everyday owies. Perfect to have around a very active and accident prone little boy! Combined with a roller bottle fitment this oil never leaves my diaper bag.

The next kidscent oil up is the SleepIze blend. An amazing blend of lavnder, geranium, roman chamomile, tangerine, bergamot, sacred frankincense, valerian root, and rue oil. Not only do I diffuse this at night in his bedroom with his diffuser night light, I will also apply this behind his ears and on his neck when he is grumpy. This blend should have an alternate name; Crabby Kid BeGone! But in all truthfulness this can really turn my grumpy whiny two year old into his happy energetic self again! Truly gold in a bottle :)

This amazing blend right here is is a must have at all times! I think I have actually used this blend more times than Ethan has so far! Blended with spearmint, peppermint, tangerine, fennel, anise, ginger, and cardamom, this oil is a go to for anything upset tummy to cramps! It also smells like heaven to me!
I popped a roller bottle fitment onto this so I can just roll it right onto the area of desire!

This wonderful blend has not needed to be used in our home, thankfully, but I am sure it will be a must have come fall and winter. Eucalyptus blue, palo santo, lavender, dorado azul, ravintsara, myrtle, eucalyptus globulus, majoram, pine, eucalyptus citriodora, cypress, eucalyptus radiata, black spruce, and peppermint are blended together with coconut oil. I will have to check back in once we are able to use this!

On top of these amazing kidscents line I have a few other Young Living oils that are a must have for me as a mom!

The first on that list is lavender. This oil is the swiss army knife of essential oils. We use for pretty much everything in our house. We diffuse it at bedtime (mixed with sleepize since we all love the smell of lavender), mix it with coconut oil for moisturizer after bath time, apply it on the back of his neck during crabby periods, and most recently to minor sunburns for immediate relief!

Another one of my must have for kids list is Thieves. This is a one of a kind Young Living blend of clove, citrus limon, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary specially formulated to support healthy immune function and to destroy nasty germs. The Essential Oil Desk Reference states, "Studies conducted at Weber State University (Ogden, UT) during 1997 showed the antibacterial effectiveness of the Thieves blend again airborne microorganisms. One study showed a 90 percent reduction in the number of gram positive Micrococcus luteus organisms after diffusing for 12 minutes. After 20 minutes of diffusing, the kill-rate jumped to 99.3 percent. Another study against the gram Pseudomonas aeruginosa showed a kill rate of 99.6 percent after just 12 minutes of diffusion."
Laborforlove blog has an amazing post explaining the scientific evidence behind Thieves. Check them out------> http://www.laborforlove.com/the-research-supporting-thieves.html

And lastly, as a mom, my must have is Young Livings blend Stress Away. I'm sure just by the name you can all guess why I keep this baby close to me AT ALL TIMES. This refreshing and relaxing blend of copaiba, lime, cedarwood, vanilla, ocotea, and lavender are just what I need during my stressful times of the day (nap time, dinner time, etc) It smells amazing and works almost instantly for me to feel relaxed and rejuvenated!

A Few Important EO Guidelines

*DILUTE, DILUTE, DILUTE! This means adding your essential oil to a carrier oil such as coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, grapeseed oil, etc. This not only protects your skin but it also helps extend the life of your oil as you can use less to apply over a larger area.

*Use one new oil at a time to see how your body responds. Test the oil on a small part of your body as skin sensitivity is extremely individualized.

*Every bottle of YL essential oil is labeled with directions on how to use it.

*Begin diffusing essential oils slowly-10 minutes at a time and slowly building up. When you first begin using essential oils your body will be detoxing itself so drink lots and lots of water to help your body detoxify easier.

*If you happen to accidently get some essential oil in your eyes DO NOT WASH WITH WATER-apply a veg oil or carrier oil. Oil begets oil. Water will simply irritate your eyes more.

*Citrus oils are photosensitive. Citrus oils will be labeled and should avoid sun and UV light exposure for up to 12-48 hours after applying.

*LESS IS MORE. Oils are super concentrated and a little goes A LONG WAY!

Oil Journey Update

I wanted to take a minute to write a quick update to WHY I am so in love with essential oils and why I am extremely passionate about wanting to share them with everyone I meet!

I have always struggled with depression and anxiety as well as just feeling all around unhealthy despite changing my eating and exercise habits. I never felt truly alive and more like I was just going through motions daily to make it to the day (that is mostly because of depression). I have tried out so many different forms of medication and therapy and the results never lasted. Why? Because I was simply masking the problem I was having not fixing it.

Essential oils have helped detoxify my body as well as restoring my body’s natural balance. How do I know this? I can feel it. I am happy, I am centered, I am grounded. It feels as though a fog has been lifted around me and I am able to live again. I enjoy things that I once despised, I sleep soundly at night, I wake up refreshed (despite being up with a toddler 1-5 times a night), and most importantly I feel better than I ever have.

I have been so blessed on my learning journey with oils that I want to be able to spread this everywhere. I want people who feel as though they will never be themselves again because depression, anxiety or anything else has blocked it to know that there is another way. There is a better way.

Please don’t take this post as me rejecting modern medicine, because that couldn’t be farther than the truth. The marvels of modern medicine are wide known and I have seen it first hand, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be utilizing these natural remedies as much as we can. Especially if they are making a difference.

<3 stay oily my friends!

Essential Oils To-Go

So it's that awful time of the year again, training mission time. Every summer it's a different training for my husband. Last summer it was 5 weeks-this summer only 3!

This will be the first time my husband has left since we have entered the world of essential oils so I felt I needed to prepare him the best I knew how!

The arsenal of supplies I sent with my husband.
Homemade anti dandruff shampoo
Thieves roll on to protect his immune system
Happy roller blend for when he is feeling sad
Focus roller blend for when he needs an extra boost of concentration

Homemade shampoo: this recipe is SUPER simple and helps my husband with his dry, itchy scalp.
Ingredients
*canned coconut milk
*liquid castile soap
*Young Livings rosemary & tea tree essential oils

I used mostly the solid coconut milk from the can with just a tablespoon of the liquid underneath (about 6 tablespoons total) and mixed it with 6 tablespoons of liquid castile soap. I then added in about 10 drops of rosemary and 10 drops of tea tree ( I would have added in a few peppermint because he likes the feeling of it but my new order hadn't come in so I didn't have it on hand)
That's it. I put it in small travel bottles I got for $.97 at Walmart for easy travel.

Thieves Roll On: (5ml roller bottle)
*5 drops of Young Livings Thieves oil
*Avocado oil

Happy Roll On: (5ml roller bottle)
*5 drops of Valor

New Beginnings

As I am sitting here rereading all of my blog posts...my head is spinning! WOW those posts are a lot to digest! Let's take a step back and I'm going to break it all down in plain, mommy Monique language.

First, essential oils have been life changing for my family. Why? Well simply put essential oils detoxify the body and clean receptor sites. Oils naturally strengthen the immune system and attack only harmful bacteria. Oil molecules send information to cells and cleanse receptor sites so that your body is able to return back to it's natural function. Essential oils help balance your body.

Secondly, Young Living is great because of their promise-seed to seal (read about it here). Young Living is a 20 year old company that was at the forefront of essential oils and I trust their quality. On top of quality, YL offers an AMAZING supportive community full of people who love oils!

Lastly, I want to share my experiences with you-not overwhelm you with facts. I'm keeping my last few posts because they are FULL of useful information, but from now on I will be speaking more from my heart and my experiences.

I hope you will join me as I learn, grow, make mistakes, and change!
Stay oily ;)

Our morning wake up diffusion consists of Lemon and Peppermint.
As we move through the day we switch to Joy and Peppermint.
Towards the end of our day I use Stress Away and Peppermint to help uplift and unwind from our busy day.
At night I diffuse straight lavender to promote sweet dreams and calming!

This is just the beginning for our family and we are loving every minute of our essential oil journey through young living! I would love to help you and your family on the journey as well!

Getting to know some basics

Essential oils have been around for thousands of years and are being rediscovered today for their healing.
What exactly are essential oils? They are the true essence of a plant (hence the name essential oils). These oils however are not like the greasy oils that contain fatty acids but are rather volatile(easily evaporated) oils. Terpenes, the main component of essential oils, are organic compounds produced by a plant to create an aroma, a key factor in the plant's ability to protect itself from parasites. Each plant species has a unique combination of 100 or more terpenes. These terpenes reside in plant's flowers, roots, leaves, bark, stems, or seeds. Essential oils are the pure concentrated form of a plant.

How are they made? Most essential oils are obtained from plants through three basic methods: distillation, expression, and either solvent extraction or hypercritical CO2 extraction. I will go over these methods deeper in my next few posts-these are just the basics!

How do I use them? There are three different methods for essential oils: topically, aromatically, and internally. Each oil has a different way it can be best utilized. The main thing to remember with oils is that since they are super concentrated you ALWAYS need to dilute the oil with a carrier oil (coconut, jojoba, grapeseed, peanut, olive, almond oil etc). Again I will go into this deeper in a following post.
Why Young Living? Not all oils are created equal. Young Living has a seed to seal promise that they stand by 100%. You will always get quality with them since they are committed to providing you with quality therapeutic grade oils.

Below I have posted a quick little video about the essential oil basics I like! I HIGHLY suggest the reference book that she talks about at the end of the video! It is amazing!

Now that you have learned some of the basics, I hope you will stick around to find out more and join me on my journey of better living!

Why I began using essential oils

We all want health and happiness for our family, but what do you do when you have found that your family has neither of those? You do everything in your power to change this. Between my depression, my husband's PTSD, and my son's autoimmune deficiency I felt like I had failed our family. I mean I couldn't help them or myself and that feeling was the worst feeling in the world. I decided to leave my job and stay home with my son and that is when I made my first investment into essential oils. We started out slow, using oils for detox baths for our family to help ward off the winter ickies. Now I have moved onto using essential oils to help lift our spirits and help eliminate artificial scents and toxic cleaning products. I am just beginning my journey and education but I am beyond excited to share it all with you and hopefully help your family along the way!
